Shooter

Remember my blood bay baby?
He is changing colors!
Chocolate brown??
What the heck? I know babies change color, but this guy has really changed. I will still register him as bay because his legs are black, but I wonder if he will shed out to that blood-bay color again next spring?

This silly colt sure has a nice disposition. He is very friendly and will come from across the pasture to hang out with a person. I love that. Some of it is from imprinting, but some of it has to be from his daddy. None of Woofer's other foals were this friendly-imprinted or not-LOL. His kicking antics weren't a bad thing. They impressed on Megan that you can't just "love" on the babies. She is careful to treat him like a small horse and impresses on him that he must face up if he wants attention and he must respect a person's space. Even my mom likes to be around him and I have to tell you-for as many horses as my mom has raised, she don't like babies much. She never really figured out how to handle them, so she just didn't.

How do you like this boo-boo?
I had the 2 horses I took to Colorado in the round pen for a couple of days and when I went out to load them up to take them back out to mom's, Roan Dog had part of his nostril hanging off. Great!! I don't think this is going to heal back together. I will have to wait until it heals up and the flies go away and then I bet I am going to have to take him to the vet to have this chunk removed. Can't leave it there, he will continually catch it on something and eventually tear it off. That would be horrible. I have absolutely no idea how on earth he did it. There is not a single thing in that round pen that he could have gotten hooked on. The only thing I can think of is that either he or Turk struck at a fly and whacked him in the nose. This is the same nostril he had an old scar on that we never knew how he got. Darn horses...put em in a padded cell and they will still find a way to hurt themselves.

Yikes! I could not even figure out what that was until I read it! Yep that looks like it will need to be removed! Dang horses! Your baby is beautiful! I have only seen a few Chocolate Horses! I think they are great!! Thanks for the great comment on my work! It really means alot! Maybe you can send me a photo of your "Rainbow" Horse to "paint!"

Shooter is looking good! Love the new color :)
As for the injury, no telling how horses do the things they do. They never cease to amaze me.
Bubble wrap!

Ugh. I was trying to figure out what that picture was of before reading about it. I knew it had to be something gross. Yes, that definitely needs stitches. The frustrating thing about horse injuries is that if you don't catch them right after they happen and get a vet to stitch them up right away, they get scars. Gabbrielle has two half-moon shaped scars, one on each side of her head, when she cut it pulling her head out of a fence. The horse has such a beautiful head and I've tried everything to keep it that way, but in this case I was too late.

Oh, and Lostine got her nose pierced a couple of years ago when someone forgot to lock the gate. She got out and started eating off the haystack. When my husband found her, she the metal S of a tarp tie stuck all the way through her nose. Amazingly, that healed up.

Even enlarging the picture I couldn't see it. I mean obviously I see the injury but it just looks strange. We do our best to keep them from harm but since they are outside they are bound to get boo-boos from time to time.

The Roan hoss is probably trying to get back at you for talking bad about him on here- I swear mine do that.

I love the color that Shooter is turning---bay is everywhere, that dark brown is not, I love it. I was praying my Shiloh came out that color but she is staying bay.....

Gorgeous

Bubble Wrap...that is too funny Mikey.

Oh well, I guess I needed a reason to take my buckskin to the vet and have them trim off that little split in his ear. Now I will have two going in for cosmetic surgery. Sheez, we are getting getting plumb fancy around here, thinking about having to take horses to a vet and all. Yuck, yuck, yuck!

I'm with you Paige-I love his new color too. Hopefully he stays this dark when he sheds out next spring.

Yikes! That is a nasty little boo boo. I just got home from camping. A horse there ran through a log pole paddock fence and had to be hauled off to a vet at 3:30am. You have to wonder at why we even try to keep them from hurting themselves!!? I think we should start bubble wrapping our horses...but then they would probably choke on it!

It looks to me like that foal will stay that rich bay. I know a few horses that changed shades in their three and four year old years. What color was his daddy?

Your gorgeous baby looks like a Mahogany bay to me! Usually they get darker, the tip off was the lighter hair around his flanks and belly. No matter- bays are my fav!

Despite his change in color, Shooter is still one handsome little fella. I am also curious as to what color his daddy is.

As for the owie...even after I read what it was, it took me forever to see it as that! It just looks strange, and of course, it has to be on old Roan Dog. At least (hopefully anyway!) it didn't happen due to a human, so he won't suffer any set backs.

Have a safe drive back!

Ouch! That is bad. At first I thought it was a butt. I was having issues on what the heck it was. Then I read on and I was alright!! LOL!!! Poor Roan Dog. I am with ya on the padded cell.

Scooter looks totally different. I wouldn't have believed you if you hadn't showed me the before and after!! WOw!! He almost looks like he turned brown instead of that blood bay. Strange!! But he still is one fine boy!!

Poor Roan Dog! UGH, I agree with ya, sillly things can hurt themselves when there is nothing to hurt themselves on!

Glad you are back safe and sound!

Yikes, I was staring at that photo, I wasn't sure what that injury to RD was until I read your description! Looks painful. Poor guy, hopefully he'll heal up fairly well!
