Mom's Crazy Horses

Mom dear got to take off for the weekend. Yay mom! First time in years.

So I got to return the favor she did for me, by doing her chores. Granted, her chores are a lot easier than mine. They pretty much consist of locking one bunch of horses up for the day and letting another bunch out for the day. Reverse in the evening.

However, finding said horses can be a bit of a challenge some days.

I jumped on the 4-wheeler and went looking for the herd.
I found this...

And this...

And this...

But no horses!

Finally, I spot a white speck. See it?...
Look in the right 1/2 of the picture. See the telephone pole? Just to the left is a small white speck. Yep...there's one of the herd markers-LOL.

So I ride to the other end of the pasture and am greeted by the herd racing toward me...
All of the sudden-they screech to a halt. Who are you?...
Aaaahhhhh--Stranger danger...run away...run away....
Finally I get around the goof balls and they turn and slowly start toward the corral...
Yea...like they didn't know why I was out there! What a bunch of dorks!!

How do you like the grasshoppers?...
They cover every wall, on every building around mom's place. Yuck!

Reminds me of northeast Montana and North Dakota...except there were lots of mosquitoes and not any grasshoppers when we were there a few weeks ago.

Wow those horses have a heavenly place to run! Supposedly grasshoppers are a sign of a clean healthy environment - but they are creepy nevertheless.

South Dakota is a beautiful place when it gets some moisture. The pastures still look like it is early June-green and lush. Liz is right-our terrain is very similar to Western North Dakota and NE Montana-we also resemble a lot of Wyoming.

The local joke is, that when they divided the Dakota Territory, they should have divided it East and West of the Missouri, not North and South. Eastern ND & SD is pretty much farmland and farmers. The Western 1/2 of the states is pretty much ranchers. It's a whole different mentality...

The current horse market and horror stories of starving horses make me feel guilty that our problem with horses is obesity. I don't dare go to an auction to see what is selling and for how, much because I would surely end up with a trailer load of young stuff to bring home and turn out to fatten up.

IF I could figure out a way to swing it, I would do just that-I think good saddle horses are going to be bringing a premium in a few years.

The 'stranger danger' comment had me laughing. My pony gets quite put out when he even sees *me* walking through parts of the pasture that I don't usually travel across. He's a "guard pony" though and charges up to make sure whoevers walking through the pasture has the right visa. They're such funny animals.

Aren't they goofy sometimes?

It's great to see western South Dakota looking so green this time of year!

can you really herd horses with a four wheeler?? When our horses were out and we needed them back at the barn - I jumped on Dudley (after hiking up a huge hill) - the horse wanted nothing to do with me "herding" them towards the corrals..it was a disaster..they actually ran the opposite way...

LMAO! The looks on their faces when then stopped! Eeew! All those creepy grasshoppers!

Oh BTW, I found your missing comment over at my place! Sorry 'bout that. :)

I love that they were galloping to you then stopped and ran when they saw the 4-wheeler. Horses are a hoot! Do you bring them in from there every night?

That is some amazing pastureland! So beautiful. My Boy would never been seen again if I turned him out there. He'd forget about lil old me in about 2 seconds! ;)

onecowgirl-mom's been using her 4-wheeler for years. I guess one day she got tired of walking out into the pasture, shaking a grain bucket and having the ponies flip her the bird and head for the far hills. She jumped on the 4-wheeler and chased them around that pasture until they finally gave up and went to the corral.

Kris-glad you are back-was thinking it was quite awhile between posts for you ;)

Callie-No problem about the missing comment. I seem to have been jumping around lately and sometimes I think I left a comment and didn't-LOL-the heat if frying my brain.

Pony Girl-I told mom about the goof balls running away and she just shook her head in disgust and said they do that to her too. Yea-about the first time we got a good snowfall and some freezing temperatures, your Appy Pill would be headed for the barn, looking for momma to take care of him-LOL.
