One of the most fascinating things about the Grand Junction area is the multiple types of geography. Every direction is completely different. Look to the east and you have the mountains. To the north the mountains give way to massive shale banks-called the Bookcliffs. The Bookcliffs give way to the desert to the west. And to the south is my favorite...the red rock formations that are completely indicative of the southwest.
Last May, My Honey and I took a little motorcycle ride through the closest park, called "The Monument" that is literally just across the road from our house. For some reason I am extremely drawn to these types of formations. I find them endlessly fascinating.
There is so much to see in this area that I suspect I'll be busy exploring for a long time. There are a lot of riding trails around. However, I believe I will have to get my horses shod if I want to ride in them much. Not so much because they are tender-footed, but because the gravelly, rocky ground will wear their feet to nothing.

I agree with you and the beauty - we've ridden out in the badlands of North Dakota - painted canyons etc a few times and I love it. The terrain is different every which way you look. I would love to visit the area you are in - it looks beautiful!
Way cool rocks! I love rocks! And bugs too. but that is another story...
Glad you are having a good experience so far!
The desert scenery is my favorite. I love the drive from Phoenix north through Page and into Kanab, Utah - it is full of wonderful rock formations. Great pictures.
