Just Shopping Away

Well, I have to admit that looking out the door and seeing that huge pickup sitting out there has definitely given me the urge to start looking for the perfect living quarters horse trailer.

This one is close...
But not exactly IT. It is only a 3-horse. Personally, I would give up a lot of the living space to have a 4-horse. My only requirement in the living quarter department is that the toilet is NOT in the shower. I just cannot bring myself to do that. The first time I saw a LQ trailer with that little quirk, I wondered WTF???

But I didn't really stop at looking at horse trailers. I was bopping around and ran across these two mares that I would love to add to my broodmare herd. Unfortunately, they are NOT listed as being for sale. But the thought crossed my mind, that the ranch that owns them probably doesn't keep older mares around, so I might just send them an email to let them know that if they ever decide to get rid of them, I would love to take them...

This one is Dolly Otoen. A rather elegant looking mare that has enough running blood to produce some pretty speedy colts. They have crossed her on a heavily Hancock bred stallion and her foals are NICE. Now that is just the right mix to get the ideal riding horse-a heavily boned stallion bred to a more refined mare and ta-da.

And this one is Red Dust Suzy...

This mare's bloodlines make me drool!! And she is gorgeous to boot. The thing is...we have several mares bred exactly like this mare and they are fanastically athletic, so I don't really know why I think I need this mare too...but I LOVE her. I have seen a couple of foals she has produced and they are super. Again, she was bred to a heavily bred Hancock stallion and the results were just right. So I guess all I can do is pop off an email to the owner and let him know that when these girls get too old to live on the range, they would be welcomed at my home.

It's nice to know that there are other people out there that are working at keeping some of these old foundation lines alive. They are certainly not everyone's cup of tea and there are people who openly despise the practice of line-breeding and in-breeding. I, myself have joked that it is called line-breeding when it works and inbreeding when it doesn't, but in reality...they are different and are used to obtain different results. It is interesting to me, to see the difference in line-breeding methods from the past and how people apply it today. Somehow, I think that the old-timers had it figured out better then and modern methods just don't seem to obtain the same results. People may justifiably argue that point though, as I know there are some very nice line-bred horses out there today. To this point we have never attempted to either line-breed or in-breed anything, but I sure do like to study the art behind it.

I need to get back to looking for that perfect trailer though, my 16 footer looks pretty dinky behind the new pickup-LOL.

Girl you crack me up!

One day our goal is to have a 4 horse living quarter trailer as well. But I can't believe how expense they are, they cost more than our house! One day though.......

Great looking mares!

I really like REd Dust Suzy! I like her wither and hip, the good muscle of her shoulder, and what a sweet face! I, too, am happy that these good bloodlines are preserved. It would be terrible for owners a hundred years from now to think that these sleazy-bred horses were the norm.

Ok, that trailer makes me drool. I hear ya, big truck, got to have big trailer. Keep looking, the good deals are everywhere. We got ours last year, 4 horse slant w/dressing room. Glad I didn't get full LQ, cause we have yet to sleep in it. But we can if we want, it does have a nice bed. I didn't realize how much I'd love that DR until we went to a show and I had a place to change!! No more schlepping to the rest room!!! For that alone, it was worth it.
AND, we paid less than $3500 for ours!!! Floor is good, lights needed work ($100) and needed new tires ($500) so for about $4k, it was perfect for us. And paid for!! (we're trying real hard not to have payments on anything)
You go girl. This summer is gonna rock!!! Shoot, we might have to haul up there and join you :)
