I've noticed lately that I am protecting my lower back by stiffening it when I ask for a stop, instead of rounding it and sinking down in the saddle- and my horse doesn't stop well when I do that. So I have to work on me in the stop, more than work on him.
Sigh.
Shirleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15454110560303310751noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550515326326288148.post-88540193128243872192014-02-20T07:43:28.798-07:002014-02-20T07:43:28.798-07:00Laura-Breezing horses is common knowledge in the b...Laura-Breezing horses is common knowledge in the barrel horse world. Sprint work is often part of a conditioning program as much as patterning work it.

But how much a person does it depends on what type of horse you have. If you have a racier-type horse, run is usually not a problem, so they work on rate a lot more. The cowier-bred horses typically require more 'breezing' because they have a ton of rate and need to be regularly reminded to just open up and run.

Both Moon and Frosty get breezed fairly regularly. Moon needs it because he does get overly ratey and Frosty because he can't run. :-)BrownEyed Cowgirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03610547057139295854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550515326326288148.post-22407419599863135962014-02-20T06:39:15.327-07:002014-02-20T06:39:15.327-07:00Wow - never a dull moment with that herd of yours!...Wow - never a dull moment with that herd of yours!! ;-) Do barrel racers ever gallop horses out on a track or a straightaway (desert, field, etc.) just to give them a chance to get used to opening up the speed without being confined in an arena? Just curious.

That Moon is a smarty-pants and he sure makes you work for your runs. I like how you break your runs down and just keep working and improving things.Laurahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01736592362765508427noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550515326326288148.post-23871303410787101892014-02-20T06:29:33.181-07:002014-02-20T06:29:33.181-07:00Frosty! Nothing has ever really stuck...Kind of like having a dog named, The Red Dog. LOL.

His registered name is Voo Doo Machine. My brother called him VooDoo. My mom didn't like that and changed it to Jet. I guess I called him Jet when I have to give an official name for him, but when I'm talking TO him, I call him 'Legs', which is better than 'Giraffe', which is what we called him when he was a youngster.

Maybe that is his problem? Not having an official name has given him an identity crisis. LOL.

BrownEyed Cowgirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03610547057139295854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550515326326288148.post-83356659641437518242014-02-19T13:18:04.606-07:002014-02-19T13:18:04.606-07:00Oh and I forgot to say...."OH Frosty!!!:Oh and I forgot to say...."OH Frosty!!!:
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15617546413512282387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6550515326326288148.post-53883584799964039372014-02-19T13:17:19.835-07:002014-02-19T13:17:19.835-07:00I seriously love how you can break things down int...I seriously love how you can break things down into every minute maneuver and the way you can feel things. I can read what you are talking about and try to picture it in my head, and hopefully apply what you describe to some of my own riding. Through you I am learning to start really paying attention to the details.

I do have one question. Does The Big Bay have a name? If not, will he ever? Just curious!
